ವಾವೆ | Vaave

ವಾವೆ | Vaave - Relationships Redefined
VAAVE, a Kannada play by Prakasam.
Premiered on Nov 29 & Dec 13, 2014 at 7.30pm in KH Kala Soudha.

Welcome...

When a confession brings a man and a woman face to face with reality, it has repercussions far beyond what they could have imagined. As further confessions and events unfold, they threaten to tear a family apart. Skeletons tumble rapidly from cupboards and it becomes increasingly unclear as to who is the victim and who is the victimizer. The facade of sophistication is gradually unmasked and the people involved come face to face with themselves.
All because of.....VAAVE.

Directors Note
Director’s note: Vaave is not an oft employed Kannada word in explaining relationships between people. For example, about two people who are somewhat related to each other, but not by blood or directly via marriage, it is said – “ In Vaave, you are a brother/sister/uncle/aunt to me”. I interpret the word as “ Unclear relationships”. Which is a neat little title for what I want to tell through this play. This is a story about a husband and a wife and their daughter - Seems like a clear enough relationship. A man married to a woman, and they beget a child. Nothing unclear there. Socially and legally, Yes. Clear as crystal. However, when vague longings of the soul pull people in different directions, all relationships undergo a churning that renders them hazy and unclear. There is an unidentifiable background dissatisfaction in every human being that remains undefined and unprocessed in most. It is an itch we cannot scratch because we cannot put a finger on how or whence it came. We think we do but we don’t know WHAT it is that will bring us steady happiness.
Why do two perfectly nice people grow apart? Should a couple remain together unto death? A preparation that enables one to discover oneself, that may involve solitary time away from family life - this was a norm in ancient times and considered a necessity . If a person chooses that in this day and age, how do the near and dears respond? Finally, what is love, or what we call love? I am thinking out loud about these so-called white collar but fundamental questions through this play. I hope you find it enriching and engaging.

Katha Sangama "Bouquet of Stories"

Katha Sangama "Bouquet of Stories"  There has been a trend of short plays in the modern time of timelessness. We are so used to instant food, job, friendship, money we are also bombarded with requests for short plays. We now have successfully prepared the “Bouquet of Stories” exclusively for you. Marking the 100th birth anniversary of Kodagina Gowramma , the gallant feminist writer at her times (1912-1939) we are staging her short story too as part of this festival.  The play is in Kannada and the exquisite selection of the stories will make you want more. With eight Jnanapeth Awards and stalwarts to choose from we had to read more than 120 short stories written between early 1930’s to 2011 to arrive at this unique bouquet. We sincerely hope that you will have a blast watching this as we have creating this performance piece for you. We enclose a small brief below of the stories to give you a better idea of the performances. We have interwoven six stories, running around the ...
