Chandan works as a business analyst in one of the leading companies has a craving towards analysing something different. He has been involved in theater for a over a decade and started his career by literally sweeping the stages across various performing spaces in Bangalore.
It is often said that “agar koyi keeda lag jaatha hai toh chodtha nahi” – if an insect (interest) gets inside you it’s hard to get rid of it. The hardest one to get into and similarly get out of is the broad field of theater. This gets to you so much that you in turn become an insect and start enjoying it.
In 2000 I had a chance to watch a legend perform from top, yes I mean literally from the top that is from the skywalk. That show changed my thought process and I realized on stage performance is may be 30% of the overall action. I decided to then to associate myself with everything apart from on stage performance. It has been a great learning experience to be associated for over a decade with this creativity thirsty field.
An actor both behind and on stage
Starting from sweeping the stage, getting costumes ironed for artistes, getting food and tea for the team, working with costumes team, creating backdrops, managing rehearsals by keeping track of the lines to getting on stage and delivering lines as needed it has been a very fulfilling journey.
On stage appearances
o Peculiar Man in Ammavra Ganda
o Inspector Somasundar in Bembidada bootha.
o Hosabelaku as rowdy,
o Taxiwala in Tirunaama,
o Katha Sangama as Mohammad Omar Pasha
It was a different challenge to be able to create a story, then weave scenes around it, add characters and create their characterization, write dialogues and make a play reachable to the audiences. It gives me great pleasure to be able to do so consistently. The connect between and audience and playwright is instant in theater and that’s what I enjoy the most.
Story, Script & Screenplay
o Hosabelaku – A script created based on the famous movie and novel.
o 13 Margosa Mahal – Script based on PD Satish Chandra’s short horror story.
o Bogie - A view of all of our lives written and created mostly with self-experiences
o Katha Sangama – Stage adaptation of 6 short stories depicting various facets of love.
As a radio jock
The creative side was nurtured all along as he was a successful radio jockey for over a year with a local radio station – 93.5 SFM now known as Red FM. A lot of love showered by listeners made life a lot more creative and spontaneous.
